CBE, Research and Community Service Office
The Research & Community Service Office (RCSO) plays a central role in harnessing the university’s intellectual capacity and resources to generate knowledge, drive innovation, and address pressing challenges in the local community and beyond. The RCSO coordinates research activities, supports faculty and student-driven projects, and fosters partnerships with external stakeholders all in alignment with the university’s broader mission of contributing to national development.
Objectives
The Research & Community Service Office at college of business and economics would aim to achieve the following objectives:
- Enhance Research Capacity: Strengthen the capability of faculty, researchers, and students to design, conduct, and publish research.
- Promote Applied and Problem-Oriented Research: Encourage research that addresses regional and national challenges in sectors such as agriculture, health, environment, and technology.
- Facilitate Community Engagement: Develop and implement community service programs that positively impact the surrounding communities, especially in low-resource and underserved areas.
- Build Partnerships and Networks: Establish collaborations with government agencies, NGOs, private sector, and international institutions to support research and outreach.
- Secure Funding and Resources: Mobilize financial, human, and material resources to support research and community service projects.
- Disseminate Knowledge: Ensure that research findings reach relevant audiences (policymakers, communities, academic peers) through publications, conferences, workshops, and other channels.
- Monitor, Evaluate, and Learn: Put in place systems for tracking the impact of research and community service initiatives, and use feedback to improve programs.
Mission
To Promote excellence in research and meaningful community service by generating relevant knowledge, building capacity, and forging partnerships that contribute to sustainable development in the region and beyond.
Vision
To be a leading and vibrant hub of research and community engagement in Northern Ethiopia — recognized for innovation, social impact, and transformative scholarship.
Strategies
Here are strategic directions that the RCSO might adopt to fulfill its mission:
Research Strategy
- Capacity Building: Organize regular training workshops on research methodology, grant writing, ethics, and publication.
- Thematic Research Programs: Identify priority research themes aligned with regional and national development (e.g., climate resilience, public health, agriculture).
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Promote cross-college research groups to tackle complex societal problems.
- Funding Mobilization: Actively seek grant funding from national and international agencies, foundations, and government bodies.
- Research Infrastructure: Develop and maintain research labs, data centers, and field research facilities.
- Quality Assurance: Establish peer-review mechanisms and research ethics committees to ensure high-quality and ethical research.
Community Service Strategy
- Needs Assessment: Conduct periodic community assessments to identify priority areas for outreach.
- Service Programs: Implement projects in education, health, environment, agriculture, and entrepreneurship.
- Student Engagement: Integrate service-learning into curricula so students participate in community service as part of their studies.
- Partnerships: Collaborate with NGOs, government agencies, and local communities to scale impact.
- Sustainability: Design sustainable community programs that can continue beyond short-term projects (e.g., training local trainers, building local capacity).
- Knowledge Transfer: Use workshops, local seminars, and extension services to share research findings with the community.
Organizational Strategy Governance: Create a clear organizational structure for the RCSO, defining roles, responsibilities, and reporting lines.Monitoring & Evaluation (M&E): Develop an M&E framework with key performance indicators (KPIs) for both research and service activities.
Communication: Maintain an active communication channel (e.g., newsletters, website) to report research outcomes and community service work.
Human Resource Development: Recruit and retain qualified staff, and support their professional development.
Sustainability Planning: Develop a strategic plan (e.g., 5-year plan) for the RCSO, including budget planning, resource allocation, and risk management.
Regional Relevance: Given its location in Tigray, the university can focus on context-specific challenges (like sustainable agriculture, resource management, health disparities) through its RCSO.
Capacity Building: Being a relatively young university (founded in 2011) means that structured efforts to build research and engagement capacity will yield strong long-term benefits.
Partnership Potential: The RCSO can leverage partnerships (local NGOs, international foundations) to attract funding and share expertise — which is consistent with how other units at Adigrat University operate. For instance, the College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences has a mission to “conduct demand-driven research … and provide community services.”
