Department of Tourism and Hotel Management
The department of tourism and hotel management was opened in 2017 G.C at Adigrat University under the College of Business and Economics. Tourism and Hotel Management Program has different activities starting from providing education to the students in order to have essential knowledge related to tourism and hotel management to become professional advisers, create entrepreneurs, responsible government and public administration officials, tourism business events and hotel managers, high level of qualified employees, and academic researchers in the field of tourism and hotel management. As we all know bachelor degree in Tourism and Hotel Management is taken four-year program to accomplish in the universities under the College of Business and Economics with the intention of being recognized for its education and research. Tourism and hotel management industries are the two sides of a one coin. It is difficult to split them siply. They are among the oldest commercial activists in the world. The hospitality industry contributes largely to the nation’s GDP in many ways, in addition to the creating jobs and boosting overall income of the country.
- Currently, the department runs regular BA Degree in Tourism and Hotel management.

- General Objective of the Department
The general objective of the department is to produce professional qualified manpower that can contribute to the development of the industries and effectively managing of the tourism and hotel industry available in the nation by making use of the huge potential of the country in the sector.
- Specific Objectives of the Department
- The department strive to produce competent and well qualified graduates to meet the growing demand of trained personnel in the sector,
- The tourism and hotel department’s produce diversity of undergraduate student’s for the sake of increasing better services to the communities that we serve.
- To provide courses mainly incorporate community-based learning experiences
- To produce graduate students who have the ability to conduct effective research in the field and provide advisory services to improve the service quality of the tourism and hotel industry.
- To provide appropriate training to the student that helps graduates to acquire the skills required to serve within the context of international standards of service industry.
- To help students develop and promote a coherent personal and public attitude that includes cultural and natural resource protection as an integrated and significant element.
- To produce graduated students who have entrepreneurial knowledge which able them to create and manage effective small businesses enterprise by their own in the tourism and hotel industry as much as possible.
- To instill an understanding of the legal and ethical responsibilities associated with the care and management of cultural and natural heritage on the part of the trainees;
- To prepare future skilled professionals to strategically manage and make sustainable and effective decision makers with high responsibility in tourism and hotel industry.
- The professional graduate student profile of the department
The students who graduates in Tourism and Hotel Management are expected to be well equipped with the knowledge and skills in the area of food and beverage practical preparation, food and beverage Service provision, housekeeping management activities, front office management, hospitality and tourism management, business activity and management areas as well as they can also involve in many managerial levels for instance in destination management organization, marketing and promotional activities, tour and travel activators, customer service managers, tourist information center experts and hotel supervisors and so on.
To sum-up the main important point, the Program of Tourism and Hotel Management enable students with high level of opportunity to create job in tourism and hotel industry in proper manner if so, student should be involve to the Adigrat university department of tourism and hotel management as much as possible.
- If the graduate students successfully undertaken the program, they will become competent in the following: different sectors as well as other positions:
- They will involve in public and private sector managers in standard hotels, restaurants and lodges manager.
- They will have the chance to be general manager, director of rooms division, executive housekeeper, front office manager, director of sales and marketing.
- Meeting manager, banquet manager, convention service planners and managers.
- Marketing analysis and planning in the hospitality industry.
- Financial accounting in the hospitality industry.
- Institutional food and beverage service managers.
- Catering operators and managers for airlines, shipping lines, tourism centers, etc
- Assistant vegetable, pastry, sauce, roast, cold kitchen and relief cook.
- Consultants in hospitality industry and any customer-focused organization, given the transferable skills and business taught on the course.
- There are also opportunities to become an entrepreneur and start their own business.
- Trainees can work as tourism development planners and policy implementers so as to transform the sector to a better level.
- The amalgam of theoretical and pragmatic knowledge and skill the trainees acquired during their study enables them to cater properly and ethically to the needs of tourists, express image of destination and promote the various tourism resources of the country.

In general, having this degree program to the students gives the opportunity to have high level of job by involving in Hotel and Tourism industry. Further the completion of the program, graduate students will have the following critical abilities:
- They have the ability to organize, plan, develop, manage and promoting tourism and hotel industries to the rest of the world;
- They will able to provide operational as well as managerial services in areas such as hotel and tourism marketing, heritage conservation, heritage administration and utilization, hotel management, front office management, housekeeping management, travel facilitation, tour guiding and operation at the national, regional and local tourism offices;
- They have the chance to involve in trade and industry sector as a tourism and hotel investment expert and perform public relation tasks in different tourism and hotel organizations;
- The ability to conduct financial activities, marketing, management and other functions within the tourism and hotel industry in innovative ways;
- Undertake Small and Medium entrepreneurial activities in the field of tourism and hotel sector; which is essential to contribute for the economy of the country;
- They have the chance to undertake relevant operational and marketing research and implement the results of these studies for the advancement of the sector and for the country development;
- To offer short- and long-term trainings in the areas related to tourism, travel, hotel, customer services, etc.
- Obtain knowledge in travel and tourism industries like Travel agencies, Tour operators, Event management organizations, Airlines, Cruise lines, Cargo operators, Shipping lines and other sectors of the tourism industry; and
- To have in-depth practical and theoretical knowledge, attitude and skills about how community organize and empowerment as much as possible.

Additionally, the department has the mission to provide outstanding community-focused hospitality and tourism professionals with dynamic management and leadership skills grounded in significant, contemporary related to the industry experience.

The mission of the department is striving to become “Center of Excellence” in tourism and hotel education, research, consultancy and other community services in Ethiopia.
To continue to be a premium, regional provider of hospitality and tourism education by emphasizing a contemporary curriculum, experiential learning and stakeholder engagement in a development, student focused environment aspects.

- The department has inadequate number of Books in library.
- The staff members have lack of educational accessibilities such as laptop and computers.
- Inappropriate teachers-student ratio which mean we could not find the actual number of students to the department due to many number of students failing the national exam.
- Future Plan of the Department:
- To provide widely community service for those service providers who are available mainly in eastern zone of Tigray.
- Highly to promote the department to its customers through preparing written materials such Folder, Banner and other promotional tools as much as possible.
- To create strong linkage with different tourism related industries, government and non-governmental organizations.
- To produce competent man power who have full of skill, attitude as well as knowledge to solve the problem available in tourism and hotel industry.
